Most people did not yet know that he was a spottily educated, small, nineteen-year-old boy somewhat overwhelmed by the strange country in which he found himself living. One reason for the hysteria over the shooting was that it raised the specter of a second Haymarket Square incident. Although the original Haymarket incident had taken place nearly a quarter century before, it remained a source of anxiety to the city. Many of Shippy’s officers had been on the force the day an unknown person threw the bomb that killed several of their colleagues.
