The titles usually fail to explain the contents of the essays effectively; there's no cumulative index in English; the present indices on the finish of every quantity are tedious and didn't distinguish major discussions of a subject matter from informal references; and wanting wading via a whole essay there isn't any technique to comprehend fast even if it includes the cloth one is seeking. This booklet makes an attempt to handle those problems.” — From the Introduction.

Rahner’s original contribution is found in the second part of the essay (194-200). It concerns punishment due to sin. Rahner maintains this concept holds the key to addressing Protestant and Orthodox objections to the Catholic position on satisfaction and indulgences. Current theology sees punishment due to sin too exclusively as vindictive, extrinsically imposed on us by God’s justice. With an eye to the Fathers, Rahner explores the “living basis” which gave rise to the Catholic theory of temporal punishment: the longer time needed to scrutinize lapsed believers as opposed to catechumens.
An outline of Aquinas’ metaphysics of knowledge (327f) highlights the role of species in human knowledge. When we know an object we become entitatively one with it by assimilating its species. The problem arises when in the beatific vision God’s own essence comprises the species. , by efficient causality. One must turn for an explanation to formal causality which can only be known through revelation. Such causality cannot be doubted as rationally possible because of the existence of the hypostatic union, and because God’s relationship to creation is formal (it cannot simply be efficient).
